Market volume has been light. I suspect that this is why we are seeing a choppy market. Algorithms and larger players can push stocks aroun in an iliquid environment.

I have been staring at this SP500 monthly chart for a couple of years.

Bulkowski's Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns, suggests that head-and-shoulder patterns w/ declining necklines and constructed over longer time periods (e.g. monthly or weekly) have a higher likelihood of success, upwards of 65%...

The measured move is devastating...
