The market had a pretty quiet and mixed session today. The major averages opened with good gains, but much of those gains were lost in later trading. Late buying came in and all the major averages finished high in their intraday trading ranges. The COMPQ and the NDX gained 1.02% and .79% respectively. The SPX was higher by .51%. Volume was lower across the board. Leading stocks were slightly higher on the day. The leaders index gained .06%. The index closed in the upper half of its trading range on lower and below average volume. The market put in a mixed session today, but big NASD stocks did pretty well. The NASD averages showed solid gains and recovered much of yesterday’s decline. Market internals were about even and the equal weighted ETFs on the NDX and SPX were lower. It was not a broad advance today. The gains were mostly in big cap tech stocks. The major averages are now mostly back above their short term moving averages. The rally is still on solid ground, but it would not be surprising to see some consolidation or a moderate pullback in the short term. September is considered the worst month of the year for the market so some weak action in the short term would not be surprising. The employment report is coming out on Friday and that could move the market if it deviates much from expectations. Jerry
